Overview
To put it simply: there's no such thing as providing a quality education without including the parents in the learning process. We know that we cannot look at the school as being totally isolated from the home. In order for genuine learning to take place, there must be a continuum of instruction that lasts much longer than the time the child is in school. By working together as partners, the parents and school can create a learning experience that lasts 24 hours a day for every child. Research states that …
- When parents are involved students tend to achieve more, regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnic/racial background, or parents' education level.
- The more extensive the parent involvement, the higher the student achievement.
- When parent are involved in students' education, those students generally have higher grades and test scores, better attendance, and more consistently completed homework.
- Students whose parents are involved in their lives have higher graduation rates and greater enrollment rates in postsecondary education.
- In programs designed to involve parents in full partnerships, student achievement for disadvantaged children not only improves, but can also reach levels that are standard for middle class children. Children who are furthest behind are most likely to make the greatest gains.
- If parents do not participate in school events, develop a working relationship with their children's educators, or keep up with what is happening in their children's school, their children are more likely to fall behind in academic performance.
Because of this overwellming evidence, PS7 believes that is paramount to include parents in the learning process. Upon enrollment, PS7 parents sign a contract committing to provide 40 hours of volunteer service yearly. PS7 also has a full-time parent liason that coordiantes parent commmunication, activites and clubs including the following:
- PS7 Parent Center
- Motherhood Group
- Fatherhood Group
- Powerschool Parents
